Akagera National Park, in eastern Rwanda along the Tanzanian border, is the country’s only savannah park. After decades of poaching post-genocide, a partnership with African Parks reintroduced lions in 2015 and rhinos in 2017 - restoring the Big Five.
The park’s mosaic of rolling hills, papyrus swamps, and lakes makes it one of Africa’s most scenic savannahs. Boat trips on Lake Ihema offer hippo and croc sightings alongside an excellent birding experience.
